Cabinet Knobs Help Revive the Appearance of Antique Furniture

The scent of sturdy, aged wood. The shiny polished surfaces. The intricate details. In the case of furniture, nothing holds you captive more than antiques that have survived the ravages of time. Having been once-or several times-possessed by other individuals in earlier years, such pieces seem to have an aura of mystery surrounding them. They were once used and loved by somebody else, and we wonder what those earlier times were like and how people lived their lives then.

You initially fell in love with antique furniture the day your grandmother's antique Chinese lacquered cabinet was brought to your house. You could not keep yourself from running both your hands across the smooth black surface, tracing your finger over the swirls of the gold hand-painted designs, and touching the brass ring handles that appear faded with time. Following that, you have scoured antique shops, bazaars, and furniture sales, trying to find more beautifully aged pieces that you might put in your collection and display in your home.

Not all antique pieces are in good condition. Some can have chipped wood, faded paint, or broken handles and clasps. You may choose to simply clean the pieces leaving the broken parts untouched, to retain its original state. If you display the furniture in your home, however, and want them to appear good as new, you may make minor repairs, like replacing the handles with new cabinet knobs which are designed to look weathered.

Many antique Chinese furniture feature multiple drawers and doors. Most of them, like chests made up of several tiny drawers, could have once been used to store a number of Chinese herbs that were combined together in order to make medicines. You might add new accents which were produced to look as if the material has aged, as well. You can get door knobs and drawer pulls which come in various finishes that may complete the old-fashioned look-weathered brass, antique copper, or pewter handles may work well with vintage items.

You may also obtain the same sorts of cabinet hardware for your newer pieces of furniture around the house, if you wish to spread the old-fashioned ambiance in the other rooms. Use Swedish iron for kitchen cabinet handles, or oil-rubbed bronze towel bars in the bathroom.

Simple and reasonably priced alternatives may give your house a different sort of look. Rather than make your furnishings look brand-spanking new, try a different route and apply cabinet hardware using an intentionally weathered design for a vintage look you love that never goes out of style.
