The northern county of Staffordshire offers an ideal place to raise a family. It is well located for commuting to both the South and further north, there are many attractions and on top of that it has pretty national parks, forests, dales, castles and pretty villages.
Originally Stafford was the main military point, controlling the crossing at the river Trent and a strategic town in the area, which was made of 5 regions. The name of Staffordshire is thought to come from the old English word meaning 'ford by the landing place'. In the 9th century the areas were combined to become the county of Staffordshire and the 'knot' became the symbol of the county.
The county of Staffordshire is on the whole fairly rural and the region stretches from the edge of the Peak District National Park to the river Trent, which separates Staffordshire from the West Midlands. There are a number of places of outstanding beauty including Cannock Chase and the Forest of Mercia. Staffordshire is also world famous for its pottery and the area around Stoke-on-Trent is known as the Potteries.
Staffordshire also has a number of very pretty market towns including Leek, Lichfield with its cathedral and Burton-on-Trent, known for its brewery. The capital town of the county, Stafford, is home to the largest timber framed house in England.
The largest theme park in the UK is based just outside of Stoke-on-Trent - Alton Towers and there is also Waterworld and the Snow Dome at Tamworth where you can learn to ski and snowboard on man-made snow, all year round.
Staffordshire offers a wide range of housing and property prices are fairly competitive compared to the rest of the country and is also a fairly cheap place to rent. The towns offer new town houses, Victorian terrace houses and pre-war properties as well as bungalows and pretty stone cottages in the country villages.
Staffordshire is a university county and so there are many opportunities for investment in student accommodation and the university is only 10 minutes outside of Stafford. Traditionally Staffordshire was a centre for the steel industry as well as brewing but now Stoke-on-Trent comes in the top 100 UK cities for business and is the economic capital of the region and the city has had millions of pounds of investment to regenerate the area. The cultural quarter of the city now offers a wide range of restaurants, bars, theatres and nightclubs.
A typical family home in Stoke-on-Trent will cost just over £200,000. Excellent transport links allow easy access across the county as well to the whole of the UK. There is direct access to the south on the M6 and the north and Scotland going the other way. London is easily reached via the M1 and Wales is a quick drive down the M54. Five main train lines serve the whole country and its under two hours from Stafford to London and there are four airports within a short distance - Birmingham, Manchester, Coventry and East Midlands.
