Dog Bark Collars - The Collar's Size Affects Dog Training
So you're looking into dog bark collars for your pet. It's good that you've chosen an approach that is both reliable and affordable. But there are circumstances when such dog training may not produce the results you expect. We will cover in this short piece some problems dog owners encounter when training their dogs.
The consequences of buying the wrong size
Some dog owners assume that what worked for one dog will work for another, and so use bark collars used by other dogs on their dogs. That, you can be sure, is a problem. There are various breeds and sizes of dogs - so what fit snugly on one dog may not be so on another. If you get the wrong size, you could end up with a bark collar that activates inconsistently. The result is a dog with a failed bark control training. The good quality dog collars activate only when the nodes on the device sense vibrations from the dog's throat, when it barks. When the dog barks, the bark collar's nodes in contact with the dog's throat activates, and the dog feels a stimulus - a spray, a sound, a static.
The aim is for every bark to be followed by the stimulus or deterrent. If the collar slides around, the collar will not be able to reliably detect each bark.
The bark collar will also be damaged, or prematurely worn out. For all you know, your dog could be clawing that collar around and banging it on the floor when you're not looking. So don't get shocked when your dog keeps barking, and you later find out the device is damaged, or badly soaked. What's potentially worse is for your dog's curiosity to result in his accidentally adjusting the intensity settings on the bark collar - an unpleasant experience that may result in its resenting the collar even more.
Don't choke your dog by tightening the collar. It could also find the collar uncomfortable. It may not bark all the time, but it may want to keep clawing the collar and potentially injure itself. Finding the right size prevents all these problems. To get the right size, here are three rules of thumb - check your dog's breed against the recommended sizes, make sure the collar is about 2-3 inches more than your dog's neck's size, and be sure you can slip 2-3 fingers under the collar when your dog wears it.
