How do people choose types of wood to use in their houses for doors and furniture? Some of my friends houses are interior designed to within a inch of their lives and each cushion is strategically placed. I feel uncimfrotable in thes environments and tend to be amore boho in my taste nad prefer shabby chic décor anyday. I love oak doors and furnitre and its hardwearing nature is ideal for my busy household. In my cottage oak is perfect to maintain the character and classy feel. After buying a beautiful oak table and chairs I convinced my husband last year to change to oak doors in our home.
This was typical he said of a woman and that I had not thought through the implications and size of the job. It then meant new door frames in oak and then of course matching skirting boards. I calucalted the cost of the oak and compared in several outlets and put my budget together to convince him and after he had an adequate does of smelling salts he reluctantly agreed. Part of my battle plan to convince him was that oak was not just low maintenance but it does not require any maintenance. He wouldn't have to paint the doors or skirting boards in hi lifetime again. My paintwork on my doors and walls constantly look shabby and in need of a coat of paint.
The oak expert I spoke to explained as I ordered the wood tyring to be efficient to impress my husband that the oak had to be in the hosue before being fitted for at aleast a week as it needs time to adjust. It appears it is more temperamental than I am. Then my heart sank as he asked was I using a specialist joiner. To my reply of "no, my husband is very handy" he went quiet. I telephoned a great builder friend of mine and asked if he thought it was a problem. He said it is specialist because oak is dense and wears out saws and blades very quickly. The other factor is that where screws are put in a hole needs to be drilled out and then screwed in and then small rounds of wood ideally lined up with the grain need to be glued back in so that you cant see the flaw. Once completed, the next step is to coat with an oil which the wood soaks up and then requires simply a wipe down each week with a dry cloth to remove dust. It looks beautiful even though it cost the entire budget for the specialist oak joiner on top of the cost of the wood. So oak remains my wood of choice even though it is one of the most expensive.
