Does anyone have a recommendation for gluing resin together?
I have a resin ornament that broke while I was moving my house last week. Does anyone have a good recommendation for glue to put it back together. Obviously super glue was something that went through my mind, but will something else do the trick better?
Sanding Resin Resin can be as tough to sand as it is to cut. Usually the surface is cured very well, and sanding it is like sanding normal plastic. Tools that are useful to sand and file resin parts are: * regular needle files * Wet and Dry sand paper * Emery paper (usually used to sand wood) * Emery board nail files (from your local department store) * very fine metal files * Details West makes a tool called a detail sander (yes this is an endorsement for a great product) As with cutting, it is best to take it slow, remember, heat softens resin and makes it more difficult to work with! Gluing Resin This is often a point of contention! Some people swear by CA glues, others prefer epoxy glue. I believe both have their place, and when used correctly, both are suitable for resin models. * CA glue or super glue comes in 2 varieties: low viscosity and high viscosity. Low viscosity glue is very watery in consistency, and as a result is very bad at filling gaps. High viscosity glue is great at gap filling, but tends to dry a little rubbery. Both glues give off fumes which are unhealthy (not to mention very unpleasant in your eyes) and it will fog up clear plastic parts very quickly. * Epoxy glue, as with the resin used by SAR stuff, is usually a 2 part mix of a glue and reactor agent. Once mixed the curing process starts, and usually within a couple of minutes the mixed glue is cured. These epoxies are available from various manufacturers in a selection of curing times. Keep in mind that the glue is not very strong until it is cured, and you will likely have to hold the parts in place, either by hand or some mechanical contraption, until the glue is fully cured. Irrespective of which adhesive you choose, make sure the surfaces you are gluing are clean. Use warm, mild soapy water or rubbing alcohol to clean the parts before gluing. It might be of some use to key the surfaces when gluing 2 large parts together. Fixing bent or distorted resin part This is something a lot of people ask me about. They order a kit, and after receiving it in the mail, some parts have bent or distorted slightly. This might look very bad as first glance, but remember the one property of resin that has caused us so much trouble so far. It goes soft in heat! Take your wife's old hair dryer, and heat the bent/distorted part evenly. You will know it is ready when you can bend it without too much effort! Lay it on a flat surface with s book of some other modest weight on it, and leave it to cool. After 15 or 20 minutes, you should have a nice straight part. This same technique can be used to distort parts to resemble accident damage/speed/weight or whatever else you would like to simulate.
