Why You Should Usually Call A Professional To Cut Down A Tree

Coming from a massive, proud Calabrian family, I was always brought up to accept that we must do everything.

And I mean everything.

Italians are natural painters, handymen, tilers and engineers. When asked where they learned the finer points of their infinite trades you'll sometimes hear a hurried, unintelligible offering that goes to the tune of 'you seee I am Italian, I learn back in Italia ', followed by a quick swap of focus.

for the familia, the cars and the household appliances and hardware, the proper training possessed by my family members regularly ends up in something burning down, something breaking permanently, or even more to the point indescribable harm to the car automobile.

It is a Saturday or Sunday afternoon at our old fashioned European home on the North Coast, and for weeks my Granddad and Godfather had been staring at the shrub in the rear yard.

Hearing grumbles of how it impedes the light from the flower patch, leaves too many branches for my Grandmother to clean up and houses pesky insects and animals, they decided it was time for the tree to be removed.

In any other setting it might be a job that my Pop and Brothers could do. But the undeniable fact was, the offending structure was a 2 storey Gumtree, which had been rooted for over five decades. My Nonna, Mum and Papa tried in vain to dissuade the intrepid branch bandits from undertaking their tree removal assignment, however making an attempt to tell an Italian to pay for somebody else to do the work is admitting weakness, something my lot looked incapable of doing.

So out came the ropes, the manual saws and the gloves. For half a day they worked at that tree, until the point when it was ultimately prepared to come down. The rest of us sat inside, expecting the worst.

The three amigos got set on the side of the tree, getting ready to yank the tree away the fence as it fell. What they didn't expect was the wood disintegrating before they could even start. We watched horrified as the tree dropped, first crashing the fence, and ultimately falling on the roof of my Nonno's much revered Audi station wagon. I have never heard as many expletives as I did that afternoon. Not only did we lose a fence and a car, but we nearly lost part of the roof and compromised the safety of our family.

From that day on, my relatives have been a lot more open to calling in the professionals to help out, most notably when it comes to tree removal. They have come to realize there are a few things you just can't do yourself, and tree removal, pruning and knocking down are best left to the professionals.

As we saw, tree removal can be a very difficult job, and can regularly cause headaches due to council rules, safety concerns and ethical recycling of trees.

Why compromise your safety and spend half a weekend troubling when it's possible to get someone else to come in and do the work for you?
