Sorry, James Murdoch: You Can't Scapegoat the Kids to Excuse Professional Failings (Forbes)
Today, the Financial Times asked some business execs to comment on a new excuse for powerful men caught in uncomfortable positions: scapegoating the kids. As the paper put it: > Last week, David Cameron, UK prime minister, and James Murdoch, chief operating officer of News Corporation and former head of News International, both used spending quality time with their children to counter criticism of their efforts at work. Is it legitimate to use your children as a justification? Or do some jobs require you to put your parental duties behind your professional ones? Phrasing the question that way was a softball, and the three experts quoted by the FT knocked it out of the park: you can't use your family to paper over disasters at work. Period. Success in business or government isn't graded on a curve, with parents given bonus points for just showing up. Like the pro athlete that is expected to suit up for a road game on Christmas, there is an expectation that working-world leaders shouldn't be distracted by anything going on at home.
