Our Yearly Camping Trip Keeps Us Together
We've all stuck together since the year we graduated, in some form or another, even though we don't see each other all the time. One of the ways we stay in touch is our annual camping trip up north. Every year on the second weekend of August we have the same spot reserved. I make sure my dreadnought acoustic guitar is stringed and ready to go and I hope in the van for the trip to meet my buddies.
Everyone has a different idea of what roughing it means. That's okay with me, though, as one of our gang is a head chef at a highly rated restaurant. He comes up with coolers full of food and cooks the whole time. You'd be amazed at the magic he can make over a campfire. Everyone eats like absolute royalty. He's up first thing in the morning with his hand mixers making pancakes from scratch!
Susan rolls up every year with her husband in a compact RV. It's done up with home decor accents and when you step in it's like you're walking into a small apartment. She has big batteries to keep everything powered and enjoys her weekend sleeping in total comfort. She's always happiest of us when it's pouring down with rain.
We eat and drink and reminisce over the good old days, then go for our typical fifteen mile hike up the hill. It used to be a twenty mile hike, but we've all gotten older and we've scaled it back a bit. It's a great walk with some really majestic views.
It's not easy to hike when you've been up all night, and with Dave's snoring, we're all insomniacs. The first year we went half of us were quaking in our sleeping bags thinking there was a bear in the campground. His snoring is that loud!
Now our camping trips are even more special since the death of our good friend who passed away in a motorcycle accident. He was always there with us, and now it's like his ghost is sitting around the campfire with us now. He really taught us the value of these weekends away, and we'll never forget it.
Our yearly trips will probably end soon now that a lot of us have kids and more responsibilities than ever. That'll never stop us being as close, though. We'll always find a way to connect even if it isn't' as often.
