How do you breed bristlenose catfish; there about 3-4 inches ?
there in a large 20 gallon, but will upgrade to 60 gallon once they grow, the male already have decent size wiskers, they both get along well and are always in an ornament house, they have been in the house on and off for about 4 months but just havent breed? Please tell me what I have to do? Heavily plant the tank? Get certain shape things? Is sand alright for the substrate, what temp? Please help 10 points to best answer cheers:)
Breeding isn't very easy, but it isn't very hard too. Bristlenose catfish prefer temperature to be at 24-26°C when breeding, however I found out that temperature isn't the most important factor that affects results. Instead, it's protection of eggs. If you keep other bottom dwellers in the same tank along with Bristlenose catfish, say Loaches, it's necessary to ensure that Loaches or other bottom dwellers cannot reach eggs. The breeding process is likely to succeed if your Bristlenose's are the only species in the aquarium. The female lays eggs under driftwood, or in caves. After fertilization the male will keep protecting the eggs (eggs are yellow). He may be not seen for as long as 3-4 weeks depending on how many females are in the tank, and also depending on the fact if females are willing to reproduce. During this time the male will fan the eggs. In my experience breeding Bristlenose catfish is a completely "automated" process that doesn't need any input from the fish keeper. The parents will not eat eggs, nor fry. Sexing is very important when you're about to keep your fish for the purpose of breeding. However, sexing is described below within one comment (click here). A pair is ready to breed once both specimens are 7-8 cm long. This depends on diet too; more proteins mean fast growth, but growth in size won't mean that fish are sexually mature.
