Fiber optic lighting for model ship help?
I am building a model of a 1/350 scale Kirov class Battlecruiser and I would like to install fiber optic lights for the Kirov's windows, however I am not quite sure where to start. What would I need exactly? And how would I execute this properly? I should mention the ship's hull is 28.27" (718.2mm) long and 3.20" (81.4mm) wide. I need a light unit that would fit inside the hull, any recommendations?
You would need some optical fibres to start with. these are available from companies that sell communications or computer stuff. Radiospares is one, or Maplins. If you bundle them together, making sure the end of the bundle is pretty flat, then shining an LED into the end will illuminate the other ends of the fibres. You can get High Intensity LEDs for brighter lights. An LED only takes about 2 volts. Try using a 2v lead acid cell with a small resistor in series. Mind the resistor doesn't get hot. If it does, use a larger wattage resistor (from an old TV)
