Rouse Faces Tough Task As Fresh White House Chief Of Staff
Rouse, one of President Obama's most trustworthy advisers, is the newest White House chief of staff. He replaces Rahm Emanuel, who made a name for himself within the position as a hard-nosed enforcer. Rouse is referred to as a low-key fixer, in sharp distinction to the volatile Emanuel, who's leaving the White House to run for mayor of Chicago. The consensus in political circles is that Rouse has taken on what might be an unrewarding headache for the remainder of Obama's term if Republicans come out ahead in the November elections.
Rouse is the 'anti-Rahm'
Rouse was declared to be the interim White House chief of staff Friday and was said to be a "skillful problem solver" by Obama. Rouse has evidently influenced decisions in the White House although nobody knew he even existed, reports Sheryl Gay Stohlberg of the NY Times. Stohlberg explained what she thought of Rouse. She said, "Rouse is the anti-Rahm." Emanuel liked everyone knowing that he was good and doing good for the country. Rouse, on the other hand, is more reserved and does things nobody notices. Obama's senatorial office was run by Rouse before this while he was chief of staff for previous Senate Democratic leader Tom Daschle. He is supposedly really close to the president as he was a senior advisor to Obama in the White House as well.
Tough job to fill within the govt
Pete Rouse has a hard act to follow as he fills Emanuel's shoes. Even before Rouse was officially called to the position, Dana Milbank of the Washington Post said he had "the worst week in Washington" because of how much is facing the White House right now. Rouse is "stepping into the hardest job in govt at one of the toughest times imaginable." That is what Milbank believes. November elections aren't looking really good for Democrats. Republicans will probably take over several seats. Obama is going to have a really difficult time getting things rolling for the next two years.
Rage originating from Palin
Pete Rouse has already done something wrong. That is what Sarah Palin thinks. According to CNN, Palin begun tweeting innuendo about Rouse as soon as his name came up as a possible replacement for Emanuel. CNN reports that Palin said Rouse maintained his voter registration in Alaska so he could collect the state's yearly dividend. Alaska's Permanent Fund dividend records do not show Rouse on there at all. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs thought he'd make a comment on Palin's accusations.
