The Low Down On The Artificial Christmas Tree
The artificial Christmas tree as you might be familiar with it today has been many years coming. There’s no doubt that it has a long history which precedes its massive surge in popularity in the latter part of the 20th century.
The original artificial tree was made before plastic became a cheap and accessible production material as it is now. Early German artificial trees were made from goose feathers which had been dyed green. Although the idea was probably very novel, it’s fair to assume that the effect wasn’t very realistic. The original artificial Christmas trees had fake red berries on the end of their branches which doubled up as candle holders, so that trees could be lit before the introduction of fairy lights. Past artificial trees have been made from such materials as aluminium and wood, but modern examples are almost always made entirely from plastic. But the plastic in question is increasingly either recycled, recyclable or both.
As with any type of fake tree or plant, technology and increased expertise results in a more realistic specimen. Today’s artificial Christmas trees are more realistic than ever, with some even using genuine bark from real trees to make the stem. Almost certainly the boom in popularity of the artificial Christmas tree in the past 30 years has been driven by improved realism.
Every year the debate over the environmental impact of the artificial tree rears its head. Despite the fact that using a fake tree saves a real tree from being cut down every year for a number of years, the fact that the manufacturing process is harmful remains. Still, a modern artificial tree which is recyclable and which is used repeatedly over a number of years is not as environmentally damaging as some people might believe.
Amongst people who use artificial trees, the most popular reasons for doing so are the reduced cost and increased convenience of not buying a new tree every single year. And although in some areas of the real or fake debate it’s hard to decide which wins, there is no question here. For the same price of a natural tree which can only be used once, you could be an impressive artificial Christmas tree which could be enjoyed for many Christmases.
