Whats there inside the multi-coloured lights used at concerts and other stage shows?
I want to know what exactly is there inside the typical beam-type lights used at concerts which change various colours and also emit some rotating patterns all seemingly from a single source. Gels, Gobos and maybe a prism! You may have seen the kind of coloured cellophane used to change a light's colour, these are called gels. Well you can attach different coloured gels together and put them on rollers so that you can roll back and forth between the colours (you'd have to have a clear sheet as well for 'open white'). Or you can put a few of these gels onto a rotating wheel which puts one of them in front of the light at a time, leaving one hole empty for 'white'. These can only do specific colours, if you want to mix your own colours you need colour wheels! These are 3 glass wheels of Red, Green and Blue (or Cyan Magenta and Yellow sometimes) which are completely clear at one point on the circle, then get darker as you go round. So you can adjust the basic colour properties of the light. As for shapes, for this you need Gobos! These are just small metal stencil like discs which you put in front of the light to create those patterns. You can get them in the shape of anything, from waves to a city skyline! Each light will have some of these in and a mechanism for switching them (maybe another wheel). As for spinning them, this can be done 1 of 2 ways. Either the Gobo can be physically rotated inside the light, or you can use a prism. The advantage of using the prism is that you can also split the beam into 3 and rotate them around each other... Don't ask me how though!
