DevilDriver Album- Death And Groove Together
You’d probably think of heavy metal first when you come across DevilDriver merch and albums for the first time. Not everyone agrees though that the band is centered purely on traditional metal. The work that the band has produced occupies a wide scope that encompasses death metal and groove metal.
The arguments over which genre the band plays is probably a reflection of the group’s difficult beginnings. They became a group at a time when each member had various other affiliations. Dez Fafara who handles lead vocals was once a part of Coal Chamber but wanted to leave the group. Drummer John Boecklin, guitarist Jeff Kendrick and bassist Jon Miller were already part of Area-51 when they were still in high school. Fafara met Boecklin and then an additional would be member, guitarist Evan Pitts. DevilDriver became an official group in 2002.
Deathride was the first original name choice for the group. This however was not the best choice of name because other groups, musical or otherwise, were already using it. The group settled for DevilDriver being more original and menacing. The cross of confusion became the group’s official sign, one that illustrated the philosophy of questioning everything. The symbol and the name are all elements from Fafara’s own life, having had a rough past, Italian roots and having been brought up in a questioning environment.
Each DevilDriver CD is seemingly unique from the other. Critics think however that what is most likely strikingly different from everything the group has ever done is their self-titled release. This initial work has received considerable negative feedback despite the good sales of band related goth clothing. Some critics had the impression that the band wanted to enter the mainstream scene more than make music. After this release, Pitts made his exit and Mike Spreitzer took over.
The difficult start did not continue for the group. They were finally able to get great responses for their 2005 second album, The Fury of Our Maker’s Hand. Unlike their first work, this one was made in a far off ranch to limit distractions. This release took on the 117th slot in the Billboard 200. It was so much better than the first one that some think of it as the true first release. The work was again inspired by Fafara’s turbulent past.
In 2005, the band reunited to create and release The Last Kind Words. They promoted this in the Download Festival, playing in the same venue as the legendary Iron Maiden. Pray for Villains came in 2009 and hit 35 in the Billboard 200. As if to make sure the upward rise stays uninterrupted, the group mapped out more work for 2010. A fifth album is said to be on the way. There’s no telling which direction the group will take on this piece of work. Fafara has hinted however, that this is yet again another album that will markedly stand out from what they have done in the past. The only way fans will truly know what this is all about is to wait for the chance to listen in.
Like other works by other bands, a DevilDriver album can’t exactly be put in a box. As with many creative artists, the work of this group’s band members is sometimes guided not by structure but simply by a simple desire to make music.
