Tube TV era that was decades into the electronic devices to bring a favorite family entertainment show to an end in the foreseeable future. The new standard for digital broadcasts seems to trigger the acceleration of the shift to digital TVs using devices such as Plasma TVs, LCD TVs, and the latest technology LED TV.

In addition, the various advantages offered also catapulted the popularity of flat screen TVs of all three types of technology, among others: the size of a thin, lightweight, and can be hung on the wall. Large screen size is also a main attraction for the tv shows fans. Another important issue is that these devices offered energy-saving features, which allow electricity consumption savings.

Choosing the right Digital Television, are quite difficult for some people, because of the emergence of various new and confusing terminology, which is often the same technology with different labels between different manufacturers. One of the most puzzling is the difference between Plasma TV, LCD TV, LED TV. Innumerable times the use of the term "Plasma TV" is directed to an LCD TV, Plasma considering is one of the first technology for flat screen with a large size (> 42 ").

What exactly is the difference between the three types of flat-screen TV is? Which among the three types of TV that deserve to be bought?

Plasma TVs

Plasma Display Panel (PDP), also widely known as the Plasma TV is one type of flat screen TV technology that allows manufacturers to produce large size Flat Screen TVs mass with an economical price.

The term and concept of his own TV Plasma technology was introduced in 1936 by an expert in Physics, Electronics, and inventor of Hungary [1]. In the development of IBM, Fujitsu, and Panasonic to introduce some kind of television that utilizes plasma technology in their research. New in 1997, followed by Philips and Pioneer Fujitsu, released a flat-screen TVs with 42 inch size Plasma technology is commercially [2].

The term itself comes from the use of PDP Plasma cells, which is a Fluorescent light, as basic lighting the television screen. A Plasma TVs use millions of plasma cells are placed between two glass display panel. Each cell that contains a combination of noble gases and small amounts of mercury that will be evaporated and given the flow of electricity so that the glow and form a plasma. The color produced from phosphorus contained in the cell, where inside each cell will contain phosphorus are 3 types of primary colors, namely: Red, Green, and Blue, or commonly known as RGB. Voltage difference given in each cell also produce color combinations that exist.

Advantages of Plasma TVs

  • Produce a black color that is better than LCD TVs
  • Contrast ratio is high (1:2.000.000)
  • Wider viewpoint more
  • Refresh Rate and Response Time, which quickly, minimizing the appearance of image blurring

Weakness Plasma TVs

  • Still image which is displayed in a long time will cause burn-in and image ghosting
  • The image quality will continue to decline along with the duration of use, albeit in a relatively long period
  • Heavier than LCD
  • Using electric power larger than LCD TVs
  • Size is generally not available below 42 inches.

LCD TV

LCD TV first appeared on the market decreasing popularity of the Plasma Plasma TV since the emergence of considering the various advantages offered compared to earlier generation LCDs. With a price that is much more expensive to a smaller size, making Plasma sales rising.

However, on further developments, LCD TV with economical prices with a variety of technical progress, to make consumers switch back to LCD TVs. Along with the emergence of HDTV and Full HD TV LCD TV product line, followed by large size, the price of LCD TVs was also increasingly makes sense in the pockets of consumers.

Basically, LCD TVs work by producing a black image and color with the selection of light emitted by a series of lamp technology CCFLs (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamps) in the background. Millions of lights will be switched on and off via the LCD shutter by passing white light with a certain intensity. Each shutter will be combined with color filters that will pass the color Red, Green, and Blue (RGB). Shutter and Filter, each of which is a sub-pixel size is very small, and by naked eye to form a joint called the pixel [3].

Advantage LCD TV

  • Produce a more realistic color
  • Anti-glare technology (without shadows)
  • Available from small to large size
  • No radiation emitted
  • Can be used as computer monitors
  • Lower electricity consumption than the plasma

The weakness of LCD TVs

  • The image quality will decrease if viewed at a wide angle of view
  • For large size, more expensive when compared to Plasma TVs
  • Refresh Rate and Response Time, which is much lower than plasma, so that sometimes produces a blurry picture

LED TV

In recent years, digital television market enlivened by the presence of a flat-screen television technology by several leading electronic vendor called LED TV. Vendor of the most aggressive in poured TV with this new technology include: Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Toshiba, and many other leading vendors.

Basically, the LED is actually a development of LCD TV TV where this type using LED backlight instead of fluorescent light that is used on the type of LCD TV before. There are two kinds of LED TVs on the market: RGB LED with LED which is placed behind the display panel, or EDGE-LEDs where the LEDs are placed around the screen [5].

The advantages of LED TV

  • Much higher level of contrast than LCD TVs, equal or even higher than Plasma TVs
  • Allows the manufacturer to produce flat-screen television with super-thin size, with a thickness of about 2.5 cm
  • More environmentally friendly
  • Lower electricity consumption of about 20-30% compared to conventional LCD TVs
  • Various TV LED products from well known vendors offering digital image processing features, features Digital TV Tuner, and various other new features.

Weakness LED TV

  • Prices are more expensive, at this point to the same size, the price of the cheapest TV LED approximately 1.5 times the conventional LCD TVs

Conclusion

In general, LED TV offers better picture quality when compared with LCD TVs, especially for image contrast and black color perfection,, though for most people the difference is not very visible. This is because the quality of LCD TVs that would be sufficient. When compared to plasma, also offered the same level of quality or even more, given the latest TV LED offers several additional features for image processing.

The price difference is quite striking with LCD TV, did not discourage some people to buy LED TV, LED TV appearance since a thinner and with the latest design. For some other people put price above various criteria buying a TV, it seems that LCD TVs are still the main choice. Plasma itself, seems to have no interest too, and began to be abandoned since 2007, considering the price difference which is getting thinner between LCD TV and Plasma TV. The design also looks increasingly obsolete also discourage people who would buy a Plasma TV. Panasonic as one of the producers who for years stood proudly with producing Plasma TV for the size of 42 inches and above, lately has begun to divert the latest line of TVs with LCD TVs and LED technology TVs.

Finally, all back to prospective buyers. If the available budget is sufficient, the selection of LED TV seems quite appropriate, considering LED TVs has been prepared for digital TV technology that really will replace analog TV very soon. However, if the budget is limited, the LCD TV is the most fitting choice, considering the features provided is sufficient, lighter, and more energy efficient when compared to Plasma TVs.
