The History Of Arundel Castle

Arundel castle was founded by Roger de Montgomery on Christmas Day 1067 and he became the very first person to hold the earldom of Arundel by the graces of William the Conqueror. The castle was built and then later damaged during the time of the English civil war, they managed to restore it to its former glory in the 18th and 19th centuries. This is a big reason why people get holiday cottage Sussex in this area.

The castle was first built in 1086 and was built as major fortification for the mouth of the River Arun. Once Roger died the property went to the hands of the King of the time, Henry I.

The medieval time period was next and you will find that during this time it was simply handed down to various people without much happening. The crown seized the castle once again after it was found that Thomas Howard was conspiring to marry the Queen Of Scots (Mary) but it was later given back to the Earls.

The Howard family then kept the castle but did nothing to it as they had wanted to resore other buildings until the castle came into the hands of Charles Howard. 1787 was the year in which he started doing work to the castle and this carried on for many years indeed, he had a big party to celebrate the finished product and then died shortly afterwards.

Queen Victoria actually visited this castle in 1846 and she really enjoyed her stay according to the resources available, many of her things are still there and after this a bit more work was carried out, this is now how you will see the castle today.

The great thing about the castle is that most of it is open to the public so make sure that if you can you can take a break from that web design job in that serviced offices Soho office and get out there to pay it a visit!
