Should Halloween be banned?
It's scarry, it's gothic and it celebrates death and evilness! why else will people hang skeleton on their doors, and carry blood stained knives and machetes? Isn't it celebrating Satan?
Here is my answer to an earlier question about whether Christians should celebrate it: Hallowe'en means All Hallows Eve which is short for All Saints Eve. It is so-called because it is the eve of All Saints Day. All Saints Day is a Catholic holiday that, in conjunction with All Souls Day on November 2, is celebrated all over the world by millions of Catholics. It is a public holiday in 17 European countries, several South American countries, the Philippines, and Mexico (where it is called Day of the Dead). It has mixed with some pagan traditions, in some places more so than others, but is Christian in origin. Halloween is the Irish/Scottish version of All Hallows. Because this version didn't maintain a strong Catholic connection, but instead became mostly a time of spookiness and superstition, it is no longer associated with the Catholic All Saints. You may have heard of the Irish feast day of Samhain which mixed with All Hallows in Ireland after the Christian day was moved to its November 1 date. This holiday was not evil in any way - just pre-Christian. The idea that Halloween is Satanic started mainly in the 1970's and 1980's by a few extremist churches. I don't know for sure why they started this, but if you look at some of their literature you will notice how strongly anti-Catholic it is - like that written by Jack Chick. Hollywood and urban legends very much helped to perpetuate this Satan myth as well. There isn't a drop of historical evidence to support the idea that Halloween is Satanic. Most holidays have adopted pagan customs - look at Christmas trees, Yule logs, the date of December 25, mistletoe, etc. Every holiday has also experienced incidents of violence at some point in history. The Halloween Satan myth is pure propaganda. When I was a kid most churches held Hallowen parties. Last week I saw a church decked out in spooky decorations and giving out candy. This Satanic Halloween idea didn't even exist during my parent's generation. EDIT: As for it celebrating death - what it is really doing is honoring the dead. All Saints Day honors the Christian saints and martyrs and All Souls Day honors all the Christian dead. Almost every culture all throughout history has had a day to honor their ancestors. Mexico and some Native Americans in the United States are just two examples of pre-Christian days honoring the dead becoming combined with All Saints and Souls. The Buddhist holiday to honor the dead ended on October 31 as well.
