How the Christmas Card Turned into the Holiday Card
Political correctness has become very important as of late, but it is difficult to say which traditions should be changed. The exchanging of Christmas cards is a quite enjoyable part of the holiday season to millions of people worldwide. In recent years, however, the 'Christmas card' has been referred to as the 'holiday card'. One must look at the motives behind this change to understand why this has happened.
Most other politically correct terms have evolved from situations in which a certain group or sector of the population became insulted or offended. As it is unacceptable for stereotyping or racism, many wonder if society has become too cautious. Many religions do not celebrate Christmas and participants in these faiths may not appreciate receiving any such cards. However, corresponding with friends, associates and loved ones is not something people want to be excluded from, so perhaps this is one reason for the 'holiday card.'
Recent studies show that approximately 20% of holiday cards have pictures of passages depicting religious views. It is interesting to note that many cards that say 'Merry Christmas' do not contain any biblical references or images, which make some to wonder if Christmas is no longer seen as quite the religious time it once was. Also interesting to note is that many holiday cards denote scripture from the bible and yet do not mention Christmas at all.
Many other holidays are also celebrated at the end of the year including: Thanksgiving, Hannukah, Kwanzaa and New Year's Day. The presence of these other opportunities to correspond with family and friends is another strong reason that many cards are now referred to as holiday cards rather than Christmas cards.
With all of these holidays to make cards for, many greeting card companies have decided that it is easier to market their cards as holiday cards. With the legal ramifications in mind, organizations are very cautious not to be deemed unacceptable by society. In addition to avoiding such ramifications or potential consequences, a wise marketer can also increase their potential client base by referring to such products as holiday cards instead of Christmas cards. Also, with the Internet in worldwide use, it is possible to reach millions of consumers from all different background, so it is necessary for greeting cards to become more generic.
The one thing everyone can agree upon is that all people enjoy correspondence from others through the year. Most recipients appreciate cards in the mail no matter if they are called Christmas cards or holiday cards. The risk of offending anyone is relatively low as long as the content is appropriate for the recipient. There are some individuals that will always call them Christmas cards, but the fact of the matter is that it probably is more about tradition than it is a willingness to offend.
