Ideas for an Italian gingerbread house?
I'm making a gingerbread house for the italian restaurant I work at and I need some ideas for the decorating. It's fine dining so I want it to look really nice, not with jube jubes and the like. I was thinking about having gold angels made of pasta and using all white and gold, or silver. Or maybe using the colours of the Italian flag, since it's Christmas colours too. Any ideas are appreciated, what do you think?
WOW!!!!!!!!! Your idea using the Gold pasta angels and using White, Gold & Silver sounds AWESOME!!!! As does the Italian flag color theme! But, since it is a fine dining establishment, the White,Silver and Gold would have a VERY ELEGANT yet HEAVENLY feel to it! There are so many beautifully shaped pastas to use, and pasta accepts spray paint and acrylic craft paints very well, and for them to be painted metallic, again, all I can say is WOW! The house part (or maybe make it a church) can be covered entirely in the white royal icing and it can be applied with pastry/frosting piping bags and use the same texture techniques that the fancy pastry chefs and cake decorators use! (Like they do on Ace of Cakes) *** NOW *** I'll throw you a curve ball here and suggest that you consider making it a 100% reusable display that can be used for years to come! I realize that this is getting away from the fact that this is no longer an object made of "food", but it can be made to look like it is a real ginger bread house if you happen to have a knack with paper mache. People will not even be able to tell that it's not real! But, if you do want to keep it real, maybe you could still use an idea or two from below within it! Make the house (or church) out of foam core board. Cut the walls, floor and roof pieces and use duct tape to fasten it all together. Be creative and cut out windows that you can reach in from underneath later and tape in transparency sheets as the "glass" windows, you can make them look real pretty by using metallic paint markers to create the window panes. *If you are going to do this, make sure that you leave a large square or rectangle "cut out" of the floor, so that you can reach up inside it at the end and "install" the windows. Now use wallpaper paste and cheap, thin, white (20#) copy paper and paper mache the outside of the whole structure, not too thick, just enough to give a veneer, so that it will look like it is Royal Icing once it is dry and painted white. Let this dry for a day. Now go back and add what ever textures you can dream up using additional paper mache as your "marzipan" so to speak. You can also use heavy gel medium to to create peaks & frosting swirls. (This is a thick gel like paste, you can get it at Michael's, it is sold in the art department near the artists paints, brushes & canvas) Keep in mind what kind of pastas you'll adding on as architectural accents as you are doing this, but do not add them yet unless you want them to be white. These can be stuck on using the heavy gel medium as the glue. Now it is time to paint it all White! Flat Spray paint will be the easiest, but may not look as good as painting it with leftover house paint (satin or flat) or even acrylic craft paint, because you can't give it a feeling of texture. You can sponge dab the house paint or craft paint, and it will give it a frosting appearence! Just keep in mind you may have to give it 2 coats to look White As Snow! Let dry thoroughly between coats and then again after final coat. Now it is time for you to get creative with all of the Silver & Gold pasta accents! Don't forget to add touches of "White Glitter Snow" it is a brush on accent. (Walmart or Michael's) Then from the large opening that was cut into the bottom "floor", put the windows in place and tape them in with a good quality tape. I wouldn't suggest spraying it with a sealer though, because it could yellow over time. Plus it may have a chemical reaction to the various paints used as well as the "windows". Do not store in any area with high moisture or humidity. It might look really pretty to put one of those FAKE battery operated tea lights inside too! Have Fun With Whatever You Do!
