Coca Cola Or Pepsi: Generations Of Change In Logo Design

The best business logos could endure beyond time imaginable. In the sense we have now, branding has only really existed for just over a century. It's also true to say that only since the 1950s have we begun to truly understand the pathway to enduring design. But that hasn't stopped great custom logo design persisting for a good century. For a common example, Coca Cola's distinctive brand image has only seen minute tweaks since bottles started being labeled in the early Twentieth Century. It's easy to imagine that design persisting for centuries, perhaps even millennia to come.

But if the aesthetics of lasting logo designs are a matter of common knowledge, why is it that we find competitive, healthy companies redesigning so often? Few brands have remained as static as Coca Cola: most do not have the advantage of being the 'original' and perpetual market leader. It almost seems that even when two brands are created almost simultaneously, whichever can establish its claim to being the original will gain (for a variably indefinite time) the privilege to retain its original branding. The other most continually be seen to innovate. Pepsi's logos change so much as a result of this phenomenon, whereas Coca Cola has a relatively static design history. In fact, before the 1950s, the Pepsi Cola logo was very similar in design to the Coca Cola one, a quasi-signature style design with a looping 'C' forming an underline.

World War II's most trivial effect was probably the addition of patriotic red white and blue to the bottle caps of Pepsi Cola bottles, resulting in the circular symbol soon adopted into the brand. But though this one element of the Pepsi logo has remained a constant, designers have simply appeared confused about where to place it ever since. With 'Pepsi Cola' becoming 'Pepsi', the typography has been switching location and font style uncomfortably for some time. Every five years or so, Pepsi decides to overhaul its logo.. Whilst it is true that Coca Cola have changed their logos with similar regularity, there has never been quite the same level of sweeping change. And their typography barely changes with each iteration.
