Whilst we’re enjoying the full throws of summer and looking forward to our summer holidays PA’s and office managers all round the country will soon be starting to plan the work’s Christmas party. You know you have to go whether you want to or not. You may have a really good working relationship with your team mates and are looking forward to a chance to socialise with them. Or you maybe are dreading being stuck in a room with a bunch of stuffy exec types. It would probably be bad form if you didn’t attend so here are a few basic tips to make sure you get through it with your job and reputation in tact.
Attire:
What you wear to the Christmas party can be very crucial. It could also vary dependant on the Christmas party venues. If you work in a professional office you need to keep it classy. Remember the golden rule of legs or chest and try to keep it as modest as possible. Dark colours are usually the most flattering and also add a touch of sophistication to an outfit. The office Christmas party is a great chance to show a more stylish side of yourself. The office Christmas part can be a great chance to a different side of yourself. Try not to wear an outfit similar to something you might wear on a day to day basis. If you’re going to be attending team building games for your works Christmas do this would require something completely different yet equally suitable.
Drink:
You know the consequences of getting too drunk; you know the consequences when you’re just out with mates. Getting too drunk at a corporate Christmas party can be very detrimental, not only your next chance at promotion, but your very employment too. A free bar is not a challenge; if you’re bosses and bosses bosses are going to be there you need to always remain conscious of their presence. The less drunk you’re adamant you are the drunker you probably are and the more likely you’ll say or do something to get yourself in trouble.
Attitude:
Contrary to popular belief, the Christmas parties are meant to be fun. If you have a serious or very responsible job a party can be the perfect opportunity to show your co-workers the fun side of yourself. Take this opportunity to have a conversation with someone you wouldn’t normally have the chance to. For example, the senior board members might be around. If you think you could help with a current project or problem you could bring it up at the party and maybe arrange a time to talk in office hours. Only slip it into casual conversation though, don’t spend all night hanging off the arm of the CEO pestering them. They’re there to have fun too.
