The Sunglasses Grand Prix
Almost every weekend right now, the Formula One drivers appear on our TV sets just before the big race, bathed in sunshine, with the obligatory grid girl advertising their car number in some far flung location.
Alongside the mass of grid babes, celebrities and Bernie Ecclestones wallet, the drivers are found hidden under umbrellas, shielded from the gaze of others and not giving anything away by covering their eyes in the latest designer glasses. We all understand why, they want to focus and concentrate on the race ahead and having a pair of sunglasses allows them to slightly more unapproachable, the sign on the glasses firmly says "get lost".
What is striking however is the sheer amount of F1 drivers now wearing some form of eye protection before and usually after the race. Jenson Button is often seen with a decent pair of shades on (usually Ray-Ban) and even the great Michael Schumacher strolls around with some uv protection, but are these just marketing decisions or are the drivers genuinely concerned about protecting their precious eyes? After all, in a sport which deals in thousands of a second, a small scratch or damage from the sun to your eye could cost you seconds.
What if the drivers did have a choice, especially over brands, would they all be using budget designer glasses or would that detract from their perception as playboy millionaires?
As the FIA makes more and more plans to even the playing field by introducing a restriction on engines, one supplier tyres and standard ecu's, perhaps now is the time to introduce standard eye protection. One can only imagine how Lewis Hamilton would look in a pair of FIA issued prescription sunglasses. At least this would help with the ever spiralling costs associated with formula one and its constant perception that it's a bottomless cesspit for corporations to sink their hard earned dough in to.
