Alley Cats remember Wheldon with banner (indystar)
Dan Wheldon always took the time to visit the Alley Cats compound at the mouth of Gasoline Alley. He signed everything. He chatted up everybody. He was one of the first drivers to bring free hats. Back in the day when he was sponsored by Jim Beam, he made sure these Indianapolis 500 fans never ran low on high- octane spirits. Wheldon's October death in a Las Vegas race crash broke so many hearts. Scot West, an Alley Cats charter member, can't recall a more engaging driver in 28 years of mingling at the compound. West turned 50 on race day last May, when Wheldon won the Indy 500 after JR Hildebrand's final- corner crash. The other time Wheldon won the 500, in 2005, the race also was on West's birthday, May 29th. "I really thought we were onto something," West said Saturday. A few weeks after Wheldon perished in a race crash, West decided how the Alley Cats could honor their fallen champion.
