What is a good bird house or bird treat to put outside in the trees?
I leave near a trail and noticed a lot of cardinal, and thought I could put out a small bird house or bird seeds, but what would attract these type of birds. I would like to hide something in the trees so only I know it is there.
Cardinals nest in thickets and thickly branched trees, they do not use a birdhouse, so that particular species would not be attracted by a birdhouse. Also, birds use birdhouses to nest, not to sleep in year-round, so birdhouses (also known as nesting boxes) are best put up in the spring, right before nesting season. Roosting boxes are good to put up in the winter, to help the birds shelter from winds and snow and keep warm, but - again - cardinals do not use them, so it would be for other species. That's the problem with feeding birds - there is no way to feed just one species of bird. Many birds enjoy the same foods.
