Do Birds Really Use Heated Bird Baths In Winter by Cassidy Frost
Do birds really use heated bird baths in winter? Absolutely! Even though there is an abundance of snow and ice in the winter, it can be very difficult for birds to find water to drink. Water is essential for our feathered friends to bathe, drink and groom. Providing a heated bird bath makes it easier for birds to not have to expend energy in melting the ice.
By providing drinkable water, this can attract many birds that may not be interested in your bird feeders. Which in turn provides you and your family lively entertainment. Put out a heated bird bath at first signs of frost and leave it out till danger of frost is gone in the spring. They have a thermostat that when the weather is warm the heater shuts off, and as the temperature drops the heater comes on keeping the water from freezing. By keeping the bath in a sunny location, where the solar radiation will work with the heater and make it more energy efficient and resulting in less use of electricity. Another way to conserve energy is to buy a dark colored bath, this will absorb solar radiation causing the bird bath to use less and electricity. Baths with a dark basin will also be easier to see for birds when the ground is snowy.
Although most birds will not bathe when the temperatures are below freezing, it is good to make sure they don't. Remove the temptation by simply adding sticks over the top of the basin or by adding stones to the bottom of the basin. Be sure to clean your bath basin regularly, so the water stays fresh encouraging your feathered friends to return. But also to prevent mineral deposits that can build up and keep the heater from working properly. If you do get a build up, try soaking the bird bath and heater in vinegar, this will help remove the deposits.
Never run your heated bird bath without water. Misuse of the heater can cause it to wear out more quickly and malfunction. Also never use a external heating elements with a concrete bird bath, because concrete absorbs water and as it freezes and thaws it can cause it to crack.
NEVER add antifreeze or salt or other chemicals to a bird bath to keep it from freezing. These chemicals can be deadly to birds even when you only apply small amounts.
Using a heated bird bath when used properly can be a easy way to supply birds with water to drink all winter long. Providing your birds with a heated bath isn't pampering your feathered friends. Winter months truly can be a trial on the outdoor critters and this is a way you can help alleviate the hard winter months.
