Cliff Fletcher is looking to the future?
Cliff Fletcher said on connected that any trade he makes will be for the future of the leafs, he said he will not make any short term moves, does this mean maybe he's trying to convince Mats? or is he shopping Darcy Tucker around? I think we could see one of our veterans gone, but i don't know who, Darcy Tucker does fill the bill, lots of teams want that grit. I hope he doesn't though. anyways, in Other news, Sheldon Souray is out for the season and Richard Zednik had eggs for breakfast.
Fletch's job is not to make the play offs nor to pick the new General Manager. His job is to best prepare the team for whoever is taking over the team. That is his mandate. Will stock piling first round draft picks be the choice of Ken Holands if he takes the job. No. Will loading up the team with speedy Europeans be the choice of Bryan Burke if he's the choice. No. Fletcher is not going to set a style for this team he is going to fix the ills and prepare the team as he sees fit. What do I think Cliff would do? Is he still the Draft Schmaft Cliff Fetcher of his last visit. Does a leopard change his spots? Keeping this in mind Fletcher never had a team that relied on draft picks. Cliff always assessed a need and filled it. Much like his mentor Sam Pollock. What is Cliff going to do with Toronto to best fit them for the future? Remember Cliff has always been tight with the dollar. He doesn't throw money away. All assets will be utilized to their fullest. Goaltending - Raycroft will start next year in the Marlies. This kid didn't lose the ability to play goal in the last year. His confidence has been shot. Playing in The A will bring that back and Raycroft will become an asset either for use or trade. Defense - Cliff will try to maximize his defense strength. The front? four will be reduced by 2. Hal Gill will possibly be moved this year. Probably at the deadline. Two of the remaining 3 front men will remain. Depending upon the market. Forward - As much as I hate to say it Tucker will be moved. Blake will be given a chance to live up to his contract healthy. If his illness had been the type that wouldn't let him play he would have been replaced on the Cap. The Tall Cans are available but I don't think anyone will give the value that Cliff would be after. Cliff likes big men who like the rough stuff. Look at the Flames of the 80's. Mats will be signed to a 4 or 5 year contract. If someone comes to Toronto looking for a deal. Be ready to bargain and don't expect to get a steal. They didn't call him trader Cliff for nothing. His wins far exceed his losses. But he will not trade assets for pigs in a poke. He is still Draft Schmaft Fletcher and always will be. Stamkos may be here but only if he's available when Toronto's pick comes. Tavares will not come to Toronto. Toronto's 2009 has already gone and Cliff isn't going after it. Watch how the game can be played.
