Bending memory wire without distorting it... Do-able?
I have a really cool idea to make a collapsable(sp?) beaded Christmas Tree using memory wire. It'll have a loop on the top, then going down it'll be small loops to larger. Then small for the trunk, then maybe a little larger for the base. Is this do-able? Is memory wire hard to change the size? (large wire to begin with, but then try to "shrink" it to smaller loops) And if so, will it still look nice without the "it's been badly bended" look? Aaaaaaaanddddd, if it can be done, how should I "mold" it, what tools should I use, and what else should I do? Thanks.
I had to go and look at what memory wire was http://jewelrymaking.about.com/od/memorywirebracelets/ss/122008.htm having a lot of experience with wire, but not sure of this product. It is, in fact, stainless steel music wire sold in loops. The hardware store I worked at for 9 years sold some of this, but in loose coils of several hundred feet that sprung out straight when released from their wire ties. Bad news and good news Bad As the link says, this is very hard wire that will damage cutters not designed for it. It also changes shape reluctantly, so that making loops that will hold their shape when not linked at the end may require considerable practice and patience to make smooth unkinked circles. Good If you fasten the ends, say by bend hooks, you should find that the wire makes almost perfect circles all by itself. This will partly depend on the size of the wire and how small the circles are. Thinner wire makes smaller circles. And you may find you can improve the shape, if it forms a bit of a corner at the hook by wrapping the wire around a dowel, rod, or bottle neck -several times depending on spring back- and pulling firmly to stretch and deform the wire. When you let go, it will spring open some so you will have to choose a shape smaller than your final circle size.
