Advent is the period beginning four Sundays before Christmas in the Christian calendar. The word means the coming or arrival. This year it starts on3rd December. Advent Calendars are aimed at children and are usually made from card with a Christmas themed picture; rarely religious nowadays. There are 24 numbered doors and one is opened each day to reveal a picture. The final door is normally larger than the others. Often you can get them with chocolate rather than pictures. There are also re-usable cloth versions with numbered pockets on which you can put a little gift ot a sweet. There are also several interactive ones on the Internet; see below
